Sneak peek at Golden Chick in southeast WichitaIt’s a big week for openings in Wichita and one of those is set to take place on Wednesday, June 25 with the arrival of Golden Chick. The chicken chain based out of Texas will open their first Kansas-based location at 1705 S. Webb Road, which is near the southwest corner of Harry and Webb.
An inside peek at one of two fried chicken chains opening in Wichita this weekTwo new-to-Wichita national fried chicken chains will both open this week within a day of each other: Raising Cane’s at 350 S. Ridge Road opens its doors to the public at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and then at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Golden Chick will open at 1705 S. Webb Road. On Monday, the franchisee of Golden Chick put on an invite-only “soft opening” event at his new restaurant, where he let the staff practice and let his guests choose from one of four meals to sample: a chicken tender combo, a fried chicken sandwich combo, a three-piece chicken combo or a fried catfish combo. I took the opportunity to stop by and meet Adam Abusaleh, who is the Wichita franchisee for Golden Chick, a Texas-based fried chicken chain that has 240 restaurants across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida and Mississippi. The Wichita store will be its first in Kansas. Abusaleh said the Harry and Webb Golden Chick will likely not be the last for Wichita. He plans to build as many as the market allows. “It took so much to get this built,” he said on Monday. “We wanted to take a little bit of a break to see how

When will Wichita roll back drought restrictions? How June's rainfall factors inIt’s been Wichita’s sixth wettest June on record , and previously low water levels at Cheney Reservoir, which supplies the city’s water, are rising. Wichita has been under phase two of the city’s drought response plan since August 2024. The restrictions in place limit Wichita water customers to outdoor watering only once a week. Kansas has been under a drought distinction in recent years due to low rainfall that’s caused Cheney’s low water levels and aquifers in Kansas to dry up. While the Wichita area and much of the state is no longer considered in a drought as of June 17, the city’s watering restrictions remain in place. Cheney was 62% full when the city went under phase two drought restrictions last year. But June’s heavy rainfall has provided some relief: it’s now 95.88% full , according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The reservoir now sits less than a foot below normal, and more rain is expected in the area this week. So when will Wichita lift its drought restrictions? It won’t be this month, and it probably won’t be this year. According to the city, the earliest Wichita could lift the phase two drought restrictions is March

Wichita loses its walking ‘Wikipedia of anything . . . baseball related'Wichita has lost its walking “Wikipedia of anything . . . baseball related.” That’s what Rob Guelfi called Joe Ruocco when he purchased his Rock’s Dugout sports memorabilia shop in 2022. On Friday, Ruocco, whose Bronx accent survived more than a half century in Kansas, died unexpectedly at home at age 77. “This has been a tough morning,” said his longtime friend and fellow bowler Greg Parkhurst, who used to tell Ruocco, “You literally brought New York to the Midwest.” On social media, there was an immediate outpouring of both sadness and love for Ruocco from those who counted him as a friend, teacher or presence in childhood memories of going to his shop. “He really was a man of many talents and interests,” said former Eagle sports columnist and radio personality Bob Lutz. “We had him on our radio show frequently to talk about collecting.” Ruocco played guitar, was an excellent bowler, a gentle teaser who sometimes pushed the envelope — especially if it was taunting fans who rooted against his beloved Yankees — and a cook known for his Italian meatballs. His love for baseball started in his Bronx childhood — specifically at his great uncle’s candy shop
